The Growing Crisis

Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, with over 56% of its 45 million people under age 18, and more than 52% under age 15. Children are the single largest demographic group living in poverty in Uganda.

The number of children living on the streets is increasing, though the total number is unknown. These children spend days and nights on streets, searching for food in garbage, begging, and performing small tasks in exchange for money or food.

Understanding the Causes

Multiple factors contribute to the ever-rising number of orphaned and vulnerable children in Uganda

🏥

HIV/AIDS Pandemic

First detected in Uganda in 1982, HIV/AIDS has orphaned approximately 30% of all children in the country. The pandemic has left many orphans in families headed by teenage mothers or elderly persons unable to provide basic necessities.

📉

Sustained Poverty

38% of Uganda's population lives on less than $1.25 per day (World Bank 2019). Families struggle to provide basic needs for all children, forcing some to resort to street life for survival.

⚠️

Gender-Based Violence

Violence against women increased by 4% between 2015-2016 (Uganda Police). Many children flee homes witnessing domestic violence, choosing the uncertain perils of street life over continued danger at home.

🛡️

Conflicts/Wars

35 years of conflicts in northern and northeastern Uganda caused many deaths, leaving children orphaned. Families displaced by war relocated to towns, where children often resorted to street begging.
